Police grill arrested IP over Rs. 40 mn deposit with Sakvithi

Inspector of Police Pushpakumara, arrested in connection with the multi million rupee Sakvithi Ranasinghe scam, was being questioned about the 40 million rupees he was alleged to have deposited with Sakvithi and about two vans that were in his possession at the time of his arrest, police sources said yesterday (20).

So far, no one had claimed ownership of the vans and police believe they may have been Sakvithi Ranasinghe’s vehicles which he gifted to Inspector Pushpakumara, sources said.

When police questioned him about the 40 million rupees he had deposited, Pushpakumara had said he sold a property owned by his wife to raise the amount and had collected a large amount as interest on his deposit, police said.

They also said Inspector Pushpakumara had enjoyed several other benefits from Ranasinghe before the scam came to light. Among the depositors fooled by Ranasinghe were doctors, lawyers and senior police officers. More persons have lodged complaints about the deposits they had made, sources added.
