Unfair taxation of senior citizens
Mr. President Mahinda Rajapaksa, I am writing this letter to you, since I feel that it is only you as Minister of Finance can be of help to me as well as all other senior citizens, who are in dire straight on account of the high cost of living, drugs, doctors’ fees and hospital bills. You would, I am sure, appreciate that those of us, who are 65 years and more, have contributed considerably to the economy of this land. As for myself, I commenced working when I was 18 years old and have paid taxes from that day to now, without a break. Do you not think that this is very unfair, when there are so many people, who do not pay any taxes at all, in spite of there incomes being considerable?

I know of many other people like myself, who even though their ages exceed 80 years, are still being called to pay taxes.

I would like to suggest for your valued consideration and immediate redress, that all taxes on those who have paid tax for forty years or more, be completely waived in the forth coming Budget or by gazette. This would be only fair, in the sunset years of our lives.

Please be so kind as to consider my request sympathetically, and instruct the relevant authorities accordingly.

M. de Silva
