US Presidential Election 2008
Republicans openly playing the race card

Take note of the following outrageous statements by the Evangelical  Conservative Movement to drive fear into American voters.

"Terrorist strikes on four American cities." "Russia rolling into Eastern Europe." "Israel hit by a nuclear bomb." "Gay marriages in every state. " "The end of the Boy Scouts."

All are plausible scenarios if Democrat Barack Obama is elected president, according to a new addition to the campaign conversation called "Letter from 2012 in Obama’s America," produced by the conservative Christian Group Focus on the Family Action.

The rightwing evangelical Caucasian voters are pulling out all stops to elect McCain; these are the types who have been brainwashed by the American brand of capitalist-evangelical pseudo- religious cults even in Sri Lanka.

Amongst the most sinister attempts to spread fear and racial animosity was the attempt by a McCain campaign worker; a college Republican student who faked that outrageous story of being attacked by a black man in Pennsylvania: A battleground state.

She confessed to it being a total lie, but yet McCain nor Palin, who rushed to sympathize with this fake psycho, have so far refused to condemn this falsehood. Her dangerous attempt (with active encouragement by some McCain campaign managers and FoxNews network) at race baiting to incite violence between the white and black Americans where relations, at best, are still quite tenuous in a number of states. That was a mentally sick attempt that should have been condemned without giving quarter to McCain. He seems to endorse such outrages.

The other stories that are gaining traction are that "Obama is a  sleeper terrorist"; "He is a Moslem socialist and a terrorist" and even school teachers are spreading such lies in conservative-oriented states. Things are heating up and there is a lot of fear mongering going around.

On a North Carolina campus, a dead bear was found dumped on Oct 20th morning, draped with a pair of Obama campaign signs; shot in the head and killed. A journalist was kicked at a Palin Rally recently. Obama campaign volunteers are treated with racial epithets and abuse and even some reports of violence in battleground states.

In North Carolina, early voters who came to a polling station last Sunday (Oct 19) were heckled by a group of nearly all-white loud and angry protesters who shouted and mocked the voters as they walked in. White supporters of McCain are increasingly becoming angry and may turn to violence.

There is also serious concern about fraudulent voter registration, but even greater concern is of voter suppression by Republicans. This country does not have a Central Federal Government Election Commission; the conduct of elections is left to local and state authorities leading to a lot of election malpractices.

In the state of Georgia, more than 75,000 voters were purged from the electoral list. Don’t you hear similar stories in Sri Lanka? And in many states you can expect similar moves to disenfranchise first time voters and poor voters who are most likely to vote for Obama.

In other places, the McCain campaign is getting ready to unleash the controversial comments made by Obama’s Pastor, Jeremiah Wright, next week although he promised not to do so in March when he was sure of winning. Those attacks were first used effectively by Hillary Clinton during the primaries in the key blue collar white dominated areas of Pennsylvania and Ohio. This time, those advertisements will be unleashed to drive fear into voters to suggest Obama hates America.

Obama is focusing on the very bad state of the economy, but he will not be able to win simply on logic and reason. Americans also are not honest about their racial biases and even those who loudly protest that they are not racists, harbour much racial prejudice like a lot of people in Third World nations such as Sri Lanka.

Everyone has been affected by the crisis.

People’s retirement funds have taken big hits, and McCain knows talking about the failed Bush policies will not help him win.

This election, therefore, will be a battle between the enlightened segment of the American population and the uninformed or the low informed voters (LIVs), who are as bad as some in feudal theocracies in the Third World.

The McCain-Palin campaign is trying their best to win by playing the race card. This race is far from over. To win, handlers will do and say just about anything and the McCain campaign is now slowly gaining ground by demonizing Obama and his associates to focus the race away from the real economic issues to questions about character and personalities.

If McCain wins it is a triumph for racial politics of yore. If Obama wins, it will be on the wings of the enlightened people in the US who are now struggling and extremely worried about the state of the economy.

"Unintellectualism", religious extremism, religious intolerance and low expectations are very much on the rise in America with more and more people turning to religious extremism and blind faith. Sadly a lot of it had to do with the radical Islamic terrorist attacks on 9/11 and the reaction to it. Such people are very hostile to rational discussion of issues or even a mention of good education, and see things only in black and white.

Please monitor this election closely. The future of the entire world is at stake here. We cannot afford fraudulent elections and ballot stealing and voter suppression. All eyes should be trained on the Presidential election in the world’s oldest constitutional democracy. The entire world must monitor this election to see there is no fraud committed because we owe it to the citizens of the US because of their true Christian concerns and tireless efforts in ensuring nations like Sri Lanka practice free and fair elections leaving no room for violence or intimidation. What should be a landslide for Obama, may not appear to be that easy anymore. The Sri Lankan Ambassador to the US should take a cue from the US Ambassador to Sri Lanka and travel to Pennsylvania and Ohio and request election officials there to ensure all ballots are counted.
