Regional summit to be held on Zimbabwe

HARARE, Zimbabwe (AP) - A regional official with the Southern African Development Community says a full summit of Zimbabwe's neighbors will be held to try to resolve the southern African nation's political impasse.

Tomas Salomao, who is executive secretary of the organization, told reporters early Tuesday that leaders were recommending the extraordinary summit be held "as a matter of urgency."

The organization is designed to foster cooperation between 15 southern African states, including the troubled Zimbabwe.

A power-sharing deal signed Sept. 15 has stalled over how to share government ministries among President Robert Mugabe's party and the opposition led by Morgan Tsvangirai. Tsvangirai accuses Mugabe of trying to hold on to the most powerful posts.
