I refer to my two articles on the ‘Muttur Massacre’ in The Island of September 29 and October 16 in which I quoted K. Godage as stating that it had been carried out by Muslim homeguards, and NOT by armed forces personnel, and that as a consequence of the failure to arrest the former, our heroic soldiers have been brought into disrepute and also Sri Lanka would suffer heavy economic losses.
Godage had cited UTHR as providing substantiation for the notion of Muslim responsibility for the massacre. But reference to UTHR reports showed nothing of the sort.
In my first article I referred to the possibility that falsity about a supposed UTHR report had somehow been made to prevail, "taking in Wijesinha, Lankathileke, Godage, and doubtless many others." That formulation clearly showed that I was not including him in the ranks of the "crypto-fascist racist gang", which I alleged had been trying to foment anti-Muslim hatred. He was rather in the ranks of those who were taken in.
I was surprised to receive a letter dated October 16 from Godage referring to his earlier letter – which I did not receive – in which he had explained how he came to be misinformed that the massacre had been carried out by a Muslim homeguard regiment. I am surprised because I am not a specially appointed public inquisitor on the ‘Muttur Massacre’, and Godage owes no explanation to me. He owes it to the public.
I hope it appears soon in The Island so that the authorities can be facilitated in their inquiries into what looks like an attempt to foment dangerous anti-Muslim hatred.
