Lahiru Fernando with 29 points and Nirosh Kumarasinghe with 21 points had an excellent day as Maris Stella College, Negombo beat pre-tournament favourites St. Sebastian’s College, Moratuwa by 19 points in the grand final of the all-island under-15 basketball tournament worked off at D.S. Senanayake College courts on Monday.
The final score was 75-56 and Maris Stella were leading 28-15 at the short whistle.
16 leading basketball playing teams in the island qualified for the ‘A’ Division tournament of the under-15 category after the zonal tournaments that separated teams into three respective divisions on performance.
Rajin Fernando of St. Sebastian’s was named the Best Defensive
Player while Nirosh Kumarasinghe of Maris Stella won the award for Best Offensive Player.
Lahiru Fernando of Maris Stella College was awarded the Most Valuable Player of the Tournament.
The consolation final was won by D. S. Senanayaka College, who beat Mahanama College without much effort 72-43. The half-time score was 28-15. Nazeel Jalali with 26 points and Sisira Hiripitiya with 20 points were the top scorers for D.S. Senanayake.
