

Strengthening of bilateral ties with Russia in order to further promote Sri Lanka’s tea market has been decided on as a mater of priority. This was divulged at a meeting between the Foreign Minister Rohitha Bogollagama and the Ambassador for the Russian Federation, Vladimir P. Mikhailov held recently.
It was also decided to deepen the existing political dialogue and elevate bilateral relations. Ambassador Mikhailoo suggested that visits at the highest level be undertaken. Practically feasible agreements in identified areas should be finalized within three months for signature, during such a visit.
The present duty structure for tea imports was brought up as matter for review in order to strengthen Sri Lanka’s tea market in Russia. The energy and banking sectors were also identified as possible areas for diversification of Sri Lanka’s economic ties with Russia.
Common international platforms such as the Asian Cooperation Dialogue (ACD) and ASEAN Regional Forum (ARF) being replicated for this purpose, was also discussed. The present Foreign Minister of Russia, Sergei Lavrov is no stranger to Sri Lanka as he was in Sri Lanka on a diplomatic posting and is planning an official visit to Sri Lanka in the near future.
Inter Foreign Ministerial consultations are also for next year in Colombo and it is expected that the Russian delegation would be led at the level of Vice-Minister, Mikhailov added.
