Twenty-20 cricket at school level

Having read the excellent letter of Nandalal Jayawardane in ‘The Island’ of 30 Oct. I would ask all those who have the interest of school cricket at heart and particularly school principals, to read and reread this letter. Why should anyone be interested in sponsoring? Is it not for his own benefit, not caring about the adverse results to those who are sponsored?

In this respect, I would like to take your mind back to world class cricketers of the calibre of Sargo Jayawickreme, M. Sathasivam, Pat McCarthy Sathi Coomarasway, Bryan Claessen, Ben Navaratne, Chippie Gunasekera etc., who blossomed sans sponsors.

If anyone wants to sponsor cricket, please leave the schools alone. They can manage their affairs. Why not go to the clubs?

Twenty-20 cricket for schools will be the deathknell of school cricketers. They will learn all the ‘agricultural’ strokes meant for adults.

May I also take the liberty of repeating once again that when the office-bearers are elected at the Schools Cricket Association AGM, they should elect those who have played First XI cricket. Many who wait to jump into office are people who have no interest in the schoolboys, but only in their welfare.
