

Generic pharmaceuticals from SPMC to Medical Supplies Division
Cabinet approved a memorandum submitted by the Minister of Healthcare and Nutrition, Nimal Siripala de Silva, to arrange for the State Pharmaceutical Manufacturing Corporation (SPMC) to supply the total quantity of selected pharmaceuticals required by the Medical Supplies Division (MSD).
Cabinet further approved the appointment of the following committee to handle the relevant pricing: Secretary, Ministry of Healthcare and Nutrition (Chairman), Director General, Public Enterprises Department of the State Treasury or his representative, Chariman, SPMC or representative, Director, MSD, Chief Accountant of the Ministry or representative, and Asst. Director, MSD (Secretary to the Committee).
The purpose of this is to enhance the capacities of the above mentioned institutions to make available at affordable prices essential drugs that have been manufactured locally.
Salaries of judges of the superior courts to be revised
Cabinet approved a memorandum submitted by President Mahinda Rajapaksa, to revise the salaries and allowances to the Judges of the Supreme Court and Court of Appeal. Accordingly, the personal allowance, special allowance, entertainment allowance and rent allowance of the Chief Justice, judges of the Supreme Court and the Court of Appeal will be increased as follows:
Personal allowance : 25% of the present salary
Special allowance : Rs. 15,000.00
Entertainment Allowance : Rs. 3,500.00, 1,500.00 and 1,250.00 respectively
Rent Allowance : Rs. 27,000.00, 25,000.00 and 22,500.00 respectively
Allowances will be adjusted with effect from 01.07.2008.
Accordingly a motion will be tabled in Parliament for the determination of the payment of the above revised salary structure.
Training School for manufacturing of footwear and leather goods
Cabinet approved a memorandum submitted by the Minister of Industrial Development, Kumara Welgama, to set up a Footwear and Leather Goods Training School at the Clothing Industry Training Institute (CITI) in Ratmalana, with necessary technical support from the Footwear Design and Development Institute of India.
A building will be constructed in the CITI premises by the Central Engineering Consultancy Bureau (CECB) for this purpose at an estimated cost of Rs. 40 million, using funds allocated in the 2008 and 2009 budgets.
Cabinet directed the Treasury to make provisions of Rs. 70 million and Rs. 50 million in 2009 and 2010 respectively for the implementation of this project.
Renovation of Tower Hall Foundation and Tower Hall Theatre
Cabinet approved a memorandum submitted by the Minister of Cultural Affairs and National Heritage, Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena, to entrust the repair and renovation work of the Maradana Tower Hall Foundation to the Central Engineering Consultancy Bureau (CECB) and to obtained necessary advice and consultancy services from the Institute of Consultancy, Training and Development to complete the task.
Bellanwila Sacred Area development
Cabinet approved a memorandum submitted by the Minister of Urban Development and Sacred Area Development, Dinesh Gunawardena, to assign the Sri Lanka Land Reclamation and Development Corporation the task of constructing the internal roads (Rs. 8.0 million) at the Bellanwila Raja Maha Viharaya as well as a toilet block (Rs. 3.4 million).
Development of Navodya and Estate Schools
Cabinet approved a memorandum submitted by the Minister of Education, A.D. Susil Premajayantha, to withdraw through the Treasury all allocations given to the Provincial Councils pertaining to the development of Navodya and Estate Schools instead of the relevant line ministries.
