President Mahinda Rajapakse, a sports administrator at a certain period of time during his political career, is said to have played a significant role in letting the players honour their IPL contracts instead of Sri Lanka’s tour of England next summer following a request by senior cricketers. But what the president may not have known is that the local cricket board had not given the players to play three years of IPL cricket. This is not the only instance where the players have approached the president to look into their ‘grievances’. Following the long lay off between the players and the board to agree on National contracts, Sri Lanka’s senior cricketers made the most of the euphoria created after winning the Asia Cup as they requested the president to look into their ‘grievances’ and the board was promptly told to agree to the match fees that the players were demanding. Hence, the players’ Test match fees were increased from 3500 US$ per Test match to 5000 US$ while for ODIs, they received almost a 100% pay hike. (Files)
