Galle Mayor to quit

Galle Mayor Kelum Seneviratne has said he would relinquish office on Tuesday, November 18.

He told a press conference in his office yesterday that he was relinquishing his post on a request made by President Mahinda Rajapaksa and would hand over the letter on Tuesday to the Municipal Commissioner. However, he would continue to remain as a Municipal Councillor.

He said that he had served as Mayor for two and a half years and despite differences with the incoming Mayor he would extend his fullest cooperation to him. "Not only by words but I would prove my cooperation through deeds."

He said that he had effected many improvements to the Galle town during his tenure and thanked the Deputy Mayor and all councilors who cooperated with him.

In the local government elections held in 2006 both Kelum Seneviratne and Methsiri de Silva polled 5998 votes each and later agreed that they would share the Mayorship, with Seneviratne serving the first half of the duration of the Council while de Silva would serve the second.
