Air strikes on neck of Jaffna peninsula
Muhamalai likely target after Pooneryn victory
The SLAF yesterday morning launched a series of air strikes on LTTE positions on the neck of the Jaffna peninsula as the Task Force I (TF I) brought Pooneryn under its control fuelling speculation of a fresh security forces attempt to pierce Muhamalai defences.

Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa said that bringing the whole country under the writ of the government is the biggest achievement of the Mahinda Rajapaksa administration. With the valiant security forces wresting control of the entire Western coast up to Pooneryn, the LTTE’s supply route has been disrupted, he said.
"The LTTE is now cornered and has nowhere to go".
The Lankan
people are proud that the Government had been able to fly the Sri Lankan flag in every nook and corner of the country after almost three decades, Rajapaksa noted.

"With the take-over of Pooneryn by the army, we will now be able to reopen a land route to the Jaffna peninsula after several years", the President told the Security Council.
