Many countries of the world have shifted the administrative capital from its former location both for security reasons and also to ease traffic congestion in the city. We should most definitely recommence the shift now for with the annual increase in traffic coming into the city there is no doubt that motorized travel will become a nightmare in the years ahead. What is worse the security of government leaders having their offices in the city would not only imperil their security but they would add to the chaotic traffic problem. Colombo would then become the commercial capital of our country.
This government should without wasting public money on new Airlines not only commence the building of new Secretariates but also new highways and even an underground railway system. If only President Rajapakse does this he will no doubt go down in history not only as the President who saved this country from being broken up but as the one President who had the vision to complete a project to build a new capital which was commenced by President JRJayewardene. President JR retained the services of David Robson a Town Planner who did a plan for a new administrative capital, but perhaps the war with the LTTE occupied his attention and neither he nor President Premadasa was able to see its completion. Had President CBK not relented to the pressures of the UNP and a section of this media we would at least have had the President residing in Pelawatte and having his office there but that was scuttled out of personal hate, and we the people have had to pay a huge price as a consequence. Let us at least now recommence the move to Jayewardenepura.
