82% teachers not qualified to teach Buddhism, CP worst affected

A recent study has revealed that a staggering 82% of teachers recruited by successive governments to teach Buddhism for six Grades, including Ordinary Level weren’t qualified.

The Education Ministry has called for the inquiry against the backdrop of allegations that hundreds of unqualified teachers had secured teaching appointments with political patronage. According to the ministry, 8,455 of those teaching Grade 6 to Grade 11 students, 6,955 weren’t qualified and shouldn’t have been recruited.

The sources said that the total number of teachers qualified to teach Buddhism was about 1,500. Nothing could be as bad as this, the sources said. A study on the basis of provinces has revealed that 90% of teachers serving in schools in the Central Province was unqualified. The report estimated the unqualified teachers in Sabaragamuwa at 87%, Southern Province 85%, Uva and North Central Provinces 84%, North Western Province 81% and Western Province 67%. In the Eastern Province, of 230 teachers, only 200 had the required qualifications.
