New strategy for English and IT
Dr Sarath Amunugama, Minister of Enterprise Development and Investment Promotion chaired the first group meeting of the Presidential Task Force on English and IT held at his Ministry recently. The Task Force is engaged in developing a long-term strategy to increase the number of young people with English and IT skills.

Participating at the meeting were Prof. Tissa Vitharana, Minister of Science and Technology, the Co-Chairs of the Task Force, Sunimal Fernando, Advisor to H.E the President and Ranjith Fernando, Project Leader- ICBP, Information & Communication technology Agency, S.U Wijeratne, Acting Secretary, Ministry of Education, A.N.R Amaratunga, Secretary, Ministry of Science and Technology, Professor Rajiva Wijesinha, Secretary, Ministry of Disaster Management and Human Rights, Reverend Metthavihari Thero, Dharmavahini Foundation, Professor P.W. Epasinghe, Advisor to H.E the President, Mr. Lucian Rajakarunanayake, Director , PRIU, senior BOI officials, and eminent personalities from the private sector and other relevant institutions.

The programme is in line with the Government's decision to declare 2009 as the Year for English and IT. President Mahinda Rajapaksa's vision is to create a widespread capacity within the country in English and in IT skills to ensure that advanced economic sectors and FDI in advanced areas can be effectively developed and promoted. The skills should benefit all sections of the population.
