Cashew and orange plantations to be enhanced
The Sri Lanka Cashew Corporation provided a special training programme on Improved Cashew Production processes to cashew extension officers in the Bibile area and a bud-grafted demonstration plot was also inaugurated, the Cashew Corporation said.

Cashew Corporation Plantation Manager B.M.M.Surendra told The Island that the training programme included new improved techniques on the cashew extension service, new planting techniques, pest control, nursery management, intercropping and prevention of health hazards.

He said that cashew extension officers from Puttalam, Kurunegala, Polonnaruwa, Batticoloa, Anuradhapura, Mahiyanganaya, Hambantota and Monaragala had participated in the training programmes. The principal aim behind the training would be to enter highly competitive cashew market and to vie for first ten cashew producing countries in the world.

Surendra added that the Government was focussed to reach self-sufficiency in cashew production by 2013 as cashew plantation in Sri Lanka could be a potential foreign exchange earner in the near future.

He said that the Supplementary Food Crops Ministry had also decided to expand orange plantation as conducive agricultural resources prevalent in some districts in abundance. The Bibile area was famous for orange cultivation and Monaragale district also could be utilized to plant orange.
