The recount of the preferential votes, of the UPFA candidates who contested the recently concluded North Central Provincial Council elections, will take place on December 6 at the Rajagiriya Elections Secretariat. The Supreme Court had ordered the recount following a petition filed by a group of unsuccessful candidates.
The recount is scheduled to begin at 8.30 am.
The elections were held on August 23 and unsuccessful UPFA candidates, Deputy Mayor of Anuradhapura H. G. Somadasa, Messrs Jayalath Bandara Seneviratne, Susil Gunaratne, Nalin Wijeratne and Ms Kumudini Basnayake moved the Supreme Court seeking a recount.
The Court on November 10 ordered a recount.
The Commissioner of Elections has made arrangements to conduct the recount in eight halls in the Elections Secretariat and each candidate who moved the Supreme Court for a recount would be allowed six representatives to be present at the counting halls to monitor the recount.
This was the first time a recount of votes had been allowed in a Provincial Council election, Election Department sources said.
