Israel’s military on alert for settler violence

JERUSALEM (AP) - Israeli defense officials say the military has been placed on alert to head off settler violence in wake of the evacuation of a disputed building.

The officials say forces have been beefed up across the West Bank. The move Friday follows the eviction of settlers from a building in the town of Hebron.

After the eviction Thursday settler youth rampaged in Hebron, attacking Palestinians and setting fire to property.

The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to make the alert public.

Police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld says there are some 500 officers currently in and around Hebron.

Rosenfeld says police are also restricting the entrance of Muslim worshippers at Jerusalem’s Al-Aqsa mosque because of fears that disturbances could erupt there during communal prayers.
