Jobs in S. Korea for 6,000 more

Six thousand Sri Lankans would be found employment in South Korea next year, Chairman, Foreign Employment Bureau Kingsley Ranawaka said. He said that foreign exchange from migrant workers which was around Rs 150 million a few years ago had increased to Rs 350 million a year.

The 100th batch of Korean bound migrant workers passed out recently after training.

Ranawaka also revealed that 30 per cent of migrant workers’ earnings remitted to the country was from Korea and complaints by Lankans employed in Korea which stood at 43 per cent a few years ago has been reduced to 5 per cent.

Sri Lanka stands fourth among the countries supplying migrant workers to Korea, he said. There are 10,500 Lankans employed in Korea and last year alone 2,100 Lankans were found employment there. Plans are also underway to launch a programme to invest the foreign earnings of Lankans in a more profitable venture, he said.
