Programme to mark 60 years of UDHR
The Ministry of Disaster Management and Human Rights will conduct a special programme today (10) to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the adoption and proclamation of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights by the United Nations General Assembly in 1948

Food security, education, health and personal security will be the subjects of discussion for implementation next year and ideas of district secretaries are being canvassed by the Ministry. Funding will be allocated to implement the proposals in 2009.

In a message to commemorate the day, Minister of Disaster Management and Human Rights, Mahinda Samarasinghe said that as the nation faces many challenges, Sri Lanka, in keeping with the noble aspirations enunciated in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR), will forge a common Sri Lankan identity which will enable it to meet these challenges in unison and ensure a better tomorrow for future generations.

The Minister said that the philosophical basis for human rights is respect for inherent human dignity. "It is only when we respect each other’s rights that we can build a strong, united society that celebrates and nurtures diversity and fosters growth and advancement. All persons, whatever, their ethnic background, their language, their religion or culture, must have the same guarantee that their dignity will be respected by their fellow citizens, the State and their institutions. It is only then that durable peace and more prosperous future can be attained," Samarasinghe said.
