TORONTO (AP) - The head of Canada’s opposition Liberals says he will step down as soon as a new leader is chosen after an effort to topple the government failed last week.
Stephane Dion suffered one of the worst defeats in the once-dominant party’s history in the October election and vowed afterward he would step down in May once a new Liberal leader is chosen.
But Dion said Monday he would resign sooner after a coalition of opposition parties failed in its bid to oust Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s Conservative government last week.
Deputy leader Michael Ignatieff is expected to replace Dion as soon as Wednesday if lawmakers vote to name a new leader at a scheduled meeting. Ignatieff is reported to have the support of the majority of Liberal lawmakers.
