Palinda Nuwara, Bulathsinhala and several other low lying areas in the Kalutara District were flooded yesterday as the Maguru Ganga overflowed due to torrential rains. Road transport along the Midalana-Kalawana main road had come to a halt and the sluice gates of the Makeli Ella reservoir had been opened to release the excess water, Palinda Nuwara Divisional Secretary Sirisoma Lokuwithana told The Island.
He said several houses in Palinda Nuwara, Ilukpotha, Galahitiyawa and Maragahadeniya had been submerged causing the displacement of a number of families.
In the Southern Province, heavy rains experienced in Derangala, Morawaka and Deniyaya caused floods in Akuressa, Athureliya, Kadduwa and Malimbada.
The Akuressa-Kadduwa road went under water bringing transport to a halt.
