If petrol prices not reduced, JVP to lead protest

The JVP yesterday said that it would take to the streets if the Government delayed the implementation of the Supreme Court order that petrol be sold at Rs. 100 a litre.

"The government’s delay in implementing the Supreme Court order indicates a serious conflict between the judiciary and legislature. The executive, legislature and judiciary must coexist. If they clash with one another, there will be an anarchy in the country," JVP Parliamentary Group Leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake told a press conference at Rajagiriya.

The JVP urged the government to pass on the benefits of the drop in th eworld petroleum prices to the people, as ordered by the Supreme Court.

"In 2005, the price of a litre of petrol in world market was US $ 60. Here in Lanka it was Rs 80. From then onwards the government increased the local price in accordance with the world price every time the prices in the world market went up. Then there was a sudden decrease in prices in the world market. But the government was not willing to grant that relief to people.

Then the Supreme Court ordered that the price of a litre be brought down to Rs 100, but the government is not complying with the Court order," he said.

"We call upon the government to respect the judiciary order and bring relief to people."

If the government failed to carry out the Court order the JVP would mobilize people, he said.
