Army shuttlers emerge as best Asian team

Sri Lanka Army shuttlers, who took part in the second Asian Paralympic Badminton Championships, won one gold medal, five silver medals and two bronze medals to be adjudged the Best Team in Asia in the championship held at the Karnataka Indoor Stadium in Bangalore, India recently.

Upul Bandara, who competed in the singles events for players with a single hand won the gold, Colonel Rajeewa Wickramasinghe, president, Interim Committee of the National Federation for Disabled Sportspersons told ‘The Island’.

Meanwhile, W. Munidasa, Jayathilaka Banda, Deepal Herath, Lalith Kumara, Upul Bandara and Densil Fernando won silver medals in the wheelchair doubles, singles and team events.

W. Munidasa and Densil Fernando also won bronze medals.

While 18 countries took part in the championship Malaysia won the overall championship.

Because of the difficulty in finding sponsors, the disabled shuttlers were not accompanied by a coach and a manager for this tour, Colonel Wickramasinghe said.
