Australia on top in first Test

Australia were firmly in control of the first Test against South Africa in Perth as they reached 228 for seven and had an overall lead of 322 runs here in Perth. The South Africans did well to restrict the hosts for 88 for four in their second innings before Brad Haddin and Andrew Symonds fought back.

Symonds was out for 37, but Haddin remained unbeaten on 39. He was involved in a 66 run stand for the eighth wicket with off-spinner Jason Krejza, who was on 28 not out.

Fast bowler Mitchell Johnson finished with the best figures by an Australian in an innings in a Test Match when he claimed eight for 61. Johnson had seven wickets to his name on Thursday and added another one when he had Dayle Steyn caught behind by Johnson for eight.

South Africa were bowled out for 281 in their first innings as Australia gained a first innings lead of 94 runs. They lead by 322 runs with three wickets in hand.
