Says duty waiver on oil not approved yet

The Secretary to the Minister of Finance and the Secretary to the Treasury Sumith Abeysinghe, filed a motion in the Supreme Court stating that abiding by the Supreme Court judgement of December 17, 2008, he took immediate steps, to get the approval of the Minister of Finance and Planning, to grant the requisite duty waiver on oil, according to section 19/A of the Customs Ordinance.

But, upto date, the approval had not been received by him. He also said that he received a copy of the judgement only at 9.45 p.m. on December 18, 2008. It was given to the Secretary to the Cabinet. The Cabinet postponed the decision, to December 23, 2008.

The Supreme Court on December 17, 2008, ordered the government to reduce the sale price of petrol to Rs. 100 per litre, with effect from midnight December 17, 2008.
