The Jaffna Peninsula would return to normal soon with the assistance extended by the International Red Cross and other voluntary organizations along with the massive relief activities carried by the Government, Social Services and Social Welfare Minister Douglas Devananda said.

He told The Island yesterday that he expressed his appreciation of the service of the International Red Cross Chief Residential Representative Paul Castella on behalf of the people of Jaffna for the humanitarian activities they have been carrying out and their willingness to help the Jaffna people out of the present crisis.

Devananda who is also the Chairman of the Special Task Force for the Northern Province said that he handed over a detailed report the Government had received concerning the flood damage caused to the people of the Peninsula to the Resident Representative of the International Red Cross.

Following yesterday’s meeting with Devananda, Paul Castella said that his organization would work in collaboration with the Jaffna Government Agent in providing relief assistance to the flood victims especially in purification of water for drinking purpose.

The Resident Representative also said that while providing relief assistance to the affected in the recent flood, due to torrential rains and cyclone winds experienced in the peninsula, IFRC would continue to provide other humanitarian assistance and emergency measures necessary for rehabilitation and reconstruction work in the affected areas in North.
