Helping safeguard human rights, Canada commends Dr. JJ
Canadian High Commissioner to Sri Lanka, Angela Bogdan had commended Gampaha District Parliamentarian Dr. Jayalath Jayawardena for taking the initiative to help safeguard human rights and lobby the Government to incorporate international covenants by forming a Parliamentarian Group for Human Rights in Sri Lanka.
In a letter to Jayawardena that Canada is a strong voice for the protection of human rights and the advancement of democratic values, she added: "From our central role in the drafting of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1947 to 1948 to our work at the United Nations today, we are party to all six major international human rights conventions, as well as many others."
Meanwhile, People’s Action For Free and Fair Elections Chairman, Kingsley Rodrigo said that as a civil organization that took every possible action to preserve human rights, they are very pleased that Jayawardena was instrumental in forming a parliamentarian group for the first time to deal with democratic issues.
