Manufacturer of false vehicle number plates nabbed

Officers from the Nugegoda police intelligence unit took into custody two persons who were alleged to have supplied underworld gangs and other criminals with false number plates and stickers, bearing State emblems very similar in appearance to those issued by the Motor Traffic Commissioner’s Department.

On a tip-off received, the police intelligence unit had raided a shop run by the suspect, at Darley Road, Maradana selling such number plates.

Illegal number plates, PVC stickers and other equipment were taken into custody by the police.

The suspects aged 48 and 50 years are residents of the Piliyandala and Bandaragama areas.

Police investigations have revealed that these number plates had been sold to persons, transporting vehicles robbed from the South to be sold in the LTTE controlled areas in the North. LTTE members and the underworld goons are involved in fixing these number plates.

Nugegoda division Intelligence Unit OIC and his team of officer are conducting further investigations.
