Police rugby captain arrested over Moratuwa shooting

Moratuwa Police Tuesday (13) night arrested the captain of the Police rugby football team, Nilusha Perera in connection with an incident where a person at Uyana Road, Moratuwa, has been shot and seriously injured.

It had been reported that the shooting had occurred by mistake. But, according to Police sources, further investigations are being conducted.

Meanwhile, Colombo National Hospital sources revealed that Kavinda Lakshan Cooray, 26, who was the victim of the shooting incident, is in a critical condition.

It was reported that the Police rugby skipper, a Sub Inspector of Police, has been returning from Moratuwa with a friend on a motorcycle and on their way met Cooray, another friend of theirs who has been driving in his car with his wife on the Uyana Road. The rugby captain’s friend, who was riding on the pillion, had jokingly taken out his gun and aimed it at Cooray but the gun has unfortunately fired causing serious head injuries to him.

Further investigations are being carried out under the instructions of Rohan Perera, HQI, Moratuwa.
