Sri Lanka’s efforts to help the internally displaced people in the Vanni, will receive a big boost with India offering medicine worth Rs. 40 million. Indian Foreign Secretary Shivshankar Menon hands over a box of supplies to MP Basil Rajapaksa to mark the transfer of medicine. This was India’s second consignment. The first consignment of approximately 1,700 tonnes comprising 80,000 ready-to-use family packs containing food, clothing and personal hygiene items arrived in Sri Lanka within three weeks and has already been distributed to those in need with the assistance of the ICRC and the co-operation of the Government of Sri Lanka.
