CaFFE says outsiders causing trouble at polls rallies
The Campaign for Free and Fair Elections (CaFFE) said that a large number of outsiders were being taken for election campaign meetings by the UPFA, UNP and the JVP for the forthcoming provincial council elections and that had created many a problem including clashes.

Media spokesman for CaFFE Keerthi Tennekoon said that the outsiders had immensely contributed to the growing unrest, arguments and fights during propaganda rallies. The situation has been further aggravated due to speakers at rallies supporting their preferred candidates instead of speaking in support of the political party they belonged to.

Tennekoon told a press conference on Monday evening, on the subject Provincial Council Elections-2009, held at the Public Library Auditorium, that a conspicuous aspect of the Wayamba and Central provincial Council election campaigns was the lack of interest displayed by the voters. This could be attributed to the violence that prevailed in elections during the recent past.

"It was noticeable at the present provincial council election campaigns, the majority of candidates were kith and kin of politicians of the area and their business acolytes. Usually trade unionists, members of women’ organizations and prominent members of youth organizations who were put forward as candidates but in the forthcoming elections, candidates of such calibre were hardly seen. This could lead to people losing faith in party politics," Tennekoon said.

He said a majority of candidates had failed to declare their assets and liabilities before handing over nominations. Though there are some loopholes in the law on candidates declaring assets and liabilities, the Department of Elections could have seen to the strict implementation of the clause, he said.

He said that CaFFE was contemplating legal action against candidates who had failed to declare their assets and liabilities.

Associated with Tennekoon at the press briefing were CaFFE President Attorney-at-Law S. G. Punchihewa and Secretary Senaka Wattegedera.
