Special delivery of poll cards today for Central and North Western PC election

Post Master General (PMG) M. K. B. Dissanayake said yesterday that there will be a special delivery of polling cards today for the forthcoming polls to Central and North Western Provinces.

More than three million voters are eligible to exercise their franchise at the election to the two provinces.

"Voters should stay at home today to collect their polling cards", he said.

He said that the delivery of poll cards commenced on January 27 and would continue till next week and any eligible registered voter who had not received his Poll Card could call over at the nearest Post Office prove his identity to obtain his/her polling card.

Meanwhile acting on the instructions of Commissioner of Elections Dayananda Dissanayake to certifying officers to allow all members of the security forces and police who are eligible for postal voting to mark their postal votes on January 28 and 29, was carried out successfully, said Additional Commissioner of Elections (Provincial and Local) W. P. Sumanasiri yesterday.

He said that this decision to allow special postal voting days for Security Forces and Police Personnel was arrived at by the Commissioner of Elections after he took into consideration that these personnel could be called to provide additional security for the Dayata Kirula Exibition at the BMICH and country’s Independence Day celebrations at Galle Face commencing this week. This could have deprived them of casting their Postal Votes as scheduled on February 2 and 3,2009

The Commissioner of Elections is scheduled to have the final round of talks with political party secretaries at the Elections Secretariat on Friday, February 6.
