KANDY – At least 217 inmates of the Kandy prison were set free yesterday (04) on an amnesty granted to mark National Independence Day.

They were 219 men from Bogambara Prison and 06 women from the remand prison at Raja Veediya, Kandy.

The release of the prisoners was executed by the Kandy Superintendent of Prison Nelson Abeydeera and his staff.

Those released included those serving terms under minor offences and who could not afford bail orders.

Meanwhile hundreds were present at the Bomgambara Prison to visit their relations serving joint terms.
