

UC chairman remanded
Colombo Chief Magistrate Nishantha Hapuarachchi remanded the Chairman of the Seeduwa Urban Council H.T. Dinal Nestro Perera till February 12 on a charge of accepting a bribe.
According to officials of the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption the suspect demanded a bribe Rs 500,000 to extend the period of renewal of an advertisement hoarding. He was alleged to have accepted a sum of Rs 250,000 of the sum originally sought when he was arrested by the officials of the Commission.
The suspect was arrested following a complaint lodged by the manager of a private advertising agency W. A. Ravindra of Polgasowita. According to the complaint the period of time that hoarding was rented for had expired at the end of last year and the suspected had demanded a sum of Rs 500,000 to renew it.
