Roshan Mahanama and Auslmat

ICC Match Referee Roshan Mahanama was guest of honour at a lavish dinner at the Knox Tavern on Wednesday 4th February - hosted by David and Cathy Cruse. The picture shows Roshan with members of the Australia Sri Lanka Medical Team - Ranjini Dassenaike and Dr Jennifer Johns - President of AuSLMAT.

Roshan was in Melbourne as match referee for the Australia vs New Zealand one day cricket matches. He was warmly welcomed to his beloved Melbourne. He was reminded by Dr Quintus de Zylva - Chairman of the Sri Lanka Cricket Foundation of Victoria (SLCFV) - that it was in 1985 Roshan and Gamini Perera were the very first two recipients of a scholarship to play cricket in Melbourne. Roshan was just out of school and had not as yet been selected to play cricket for Sri Lanka. Roshan played for the Fitzroy Cricket Club and Gamini for the Prahran Cricket Club. Ian Crawford spoke of the friendship SLCFV have since had with Roshan and how proud it was to note that he has been match referee in over 100 matches.

Roshan and AuSLMAT have similar aspirations in helping Sri Lanka. Roshan is a trustee of the Board of Governors of the Association for Rehabilitation of Spinal Cord Injuries (ARSCI) at Ragama in Sri Lanka. AuSLMAT was founded after the Asian Tsunami of Boxing Day 2004 and have since then made 16 visits to southern Sri Lanka and assisted in hospitals at Galle, Matara and Hambantota. Dr Jennifer Johns - Cardiologist at the Austin hospital in Melbourne - has lectured and taught echo-cardiography at all these hospitals and will again jointly lead the team with Dr. Quintus de Zylva when AuSLMAT make their 17th visit to Sri Lanka from the 7th of June this year.

Donations were accepted for ARSCI and AuSLMAT and a further sum of money collected on the night will be given to HEART FOR KIDS - a charity for which Cathy Cruse will walk Kilimanjaro later this year in an effort to raise $100,000.

AuSLMAT is proud to be associated with Roshan and share similar aspirations for the betterment of life in Sri Lanka.
