Airport for Rangiri Dambulla

Minister Dinesh Gunawardena said plans were underway to set up an airport in Dambulla.

He made this comment while opening the Galewela T. B. Tennekoon Memorial Building constructed at a cost of around Rs. 93 million.

It was built under the Galewela urban development plan through the Greater Dambulla Development project implemented under the Urban Development an Sacred Area Development Ministry.

Minister Dinesh Gunawardana and the Provincial Councils and Provincial Council Administration Minister Janaka Bandara Tennakoon, attended the opening ceremony.

In addition the proposed warehouse complex, implemented by the Galewela Urban Development unit and several other projects including the Freezing facilities unit, the Granary access Roads Development, rehabilitation project, public bus stand and the trading complex, were launched at this occasion.

"The main aim of the project is the development of Rangiri Dambulla township and making it the economic core, in the international tourist industry.

"Basic plans are underway for the construction of a new railway line via Rangiri Dambulla township and to provide a new airport facility for Dambulla in the near future," Gunawardana said.

Under the Galewela development programme, the agricultural community and the small scale industrialists would be provided facilities, for storing their agricultural and farming products and the manufactured goods, for sale.
