

Police probe into doctor’s assault coninues:Ministry conducts separate investigation
While the Anuradhapura police coninued with investigations into the assault of North- Central Province Provincial Health Director Dr.E.Attapattu, the Health Ministry on the instruction of the Director General of Health Services Dr.Ajith Mendis will dispatch a special investigation team to Anuradhapura tomorrow in order to conduct a full probe, the Health Ministry said yesterday.
Director General of Health Services Dr.Ajith Mendis told The Island that he had assigned a special investigation team to probe the assault on Dr.Attapattu by some unknown men.
SSP Ranjith Gunasekera said Anuradhapura police was conducting investigations into the assault. According to the victim’s statement to the Police some unknown persons had followed him on February 6 and had attacked him around 6.00 p.m.while he was proceeding home in his car after work. Dr. Attapattu had sustained minor injuries and had sought hospital treatment However he was discharged from the hospital. The assault appears to have taken place due to a personal grudge, according to initial Police investigations.However Anuradha-pura police would conduct further investigations to get more details since no one has so far been arrested.
Meanwhile, the GMOA branch of Anuradhapura described the victim as one of the efficient and very unassuming doctors and strongly condemned the attack on this innocent individual. It further said that unless authorities ensure security of doctors the government could expect more stringent action from the GMOA.
