Media freedom in Gaza

Israel did not allow journalist to report from the battlefield in Gaza. The US, Britain and EU were deaf dumb and mute.

The US had "organized tours" of selected handpicked journalists throughout the entire Iraqi war. Not one independent western reporter was allowed to go to Fallujah or elsewhere.  Now they are suddenly concerned about new reporting when there is a war going on in which the legitimate government is fighting the world’s most dedicated group of separatist terrorists in a small third world nation?

Here is what the Chief of Associate Press said today.  Please read. Begin quote

"The Bush administration turned the U.S. military into a global propaganda machine while imposing tough restrictions on journalists seeking to give the public truthful reports about the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, Associated Press chief executive Tom Curley said Friday."

Much like in Vietnam, "civilian policymakers and soldiers alike have cracked down on independent reporting from the battlefield" when the news has been unflattering, Curley said. "Top commanders have told me that if I stood and the AP stood by its journalistic principles, the AP and I would be ruined."

The old Sinhala saying "maha kakuluwa adeyta gihing, podi kakuluwata keeling enna kiuwwa wagey" is so true.  The father crab crawls sideways and tells the baby crab to walk straight.!  (not practicing what one preaches). So please read the news excerpt submitted here. As usual the west wants to tell the third world what to do and say without really having to follow the same set of rules.
