Climate food and energy crisis to hit world
causes concerns for survival
World population presently 7 billion
will move up to 9 billion
- Dr. Nina V. Fedoroff

Science and Technology Adviser to the secretary of State and the Administrator of USAID, US Department of State, Dr. Nina Fedoroff addressed the press last week. Main area for discussion was genetically modified food, and impending food shortages because of population increases globally and methods that could be adopted to stem food shortages.

The planetary population 12 years ago was substantially lower than present readings would reveal. There have been areas for control, but minimally so. Presently world population now stands at 6.7 billion, (or 6,762, 385, 436). This population figure will increase to 9 billion by 2040. Considering Climate, food, and energy crises global concerns will be that increasing population will impose pressures for food growth and the need to ensure food production will keep pace with expected population growth Dr. Fedoroff said.

Added to present global woes denuding the forest cover in many countries particularly montain rain forests was not helping reduce crisis situations emanating from such destructive elemental reaches. Plants and population and mutual interest placings of both phenomena was inevitable Dr. Federoff said.

Genetcally modified crops were after all are not harmful to plant propagation and is presently a cheap source of plant increases for food production. More so plant progeny was conducive to healthy food origins. Over the past 30 to 40 years food resources are now described relatively low.

Considering the subject discussed was within that applicable to plantation crops vegetative propagation presently practiced in the tea industry here was also discussed. Additionally Molecular bio technology was practiced in the TRI rather than genetically modified techniques.

Dr.Fedoroff also said double cropping was being practiced for maximum land use. Additionally SALT ( Sloping Agricultural Land Technology), was practiced in the upper reaches of the central hills in Sri Lanka, and was in concert with discussions with Dr. Fedoroff.

Discussions also centered round Energy, water, and people.

That being that people leave the land they had cultured for generations and the choices they have eventually..

The wheat belt of Alberta Saskatchewan and Manitoba also came into focus as did rice and interbreeding of plants.
