Over 750 pregnant IDPs to be warded
The Ministry of Health is taking steps to admit about 750 IDPs who are in an advanced state of pregnancy in welfare villages in Manikfarm, Chettikulam amd Nellikulam to the Vavuniya Teaching Hospital, Chettikulam Base Hospital and Poovarasankulam District Hospital for confinement.
The welfare villages where the IDPs are housed are not at all conducive for confinement and an emergency situation could make matters worse for both baby and mother, health ministry spokesman W. Wanninayake said.
The three hospitals where the expectant mothers were expected to be admitted have been fully equipped with all necessities in addition to gynaecologists and experienced supportive staff.
The Health Ministry has also taken steps to dispatch a gynaecologist from Colombo to these hospitals on a weekly basis.
