Lara’s 400 tempting Younis

Pakistan captain Younis Khan, who is 95 runs short of breaking Brian

Lara’s World Record for most runs in an innings admitted that the

milestone is tempting with the first Test now destined for a high scoring draw.

After Sri Lanka piled up a mammoth 644 for seven declared, Pakistan

reached 574 for five on a flat wicket and Younis stole the limelight with a career best unbeaten 306 not out and is set to become the highest run scorer in an innings.

"The record is there for the taking and I am excited about it. I don’t

play for personal milestones, but in the context of the game, there’s no harm in going for it. We also need to give our faster bowlers a go ahead of the second Test and we are thinking of giving them about 40 overs. So let’s see how things progress," Younis told journalists.

"When we started today our game plan was to avoid the follow on. Once we did that we wanted to get closer to Sri Lanka’s total and things went to plan as we put on crucial partnerships," he added.

Despite the Sri Lankans picking up just two wickets on the day, Younis

felt the opposition kept the pressure on constantly asking questions from the Pakistani batsmen and appreciated their efforts.

"There’s no doubt that Murali and Mendis are class bowlers. They’ve got

awesome talent and they really kept things tight. If you take Murali, he bowled 60 overs and gave only less than three runs an over and Mendis was equally tight despite bowling more than 50 overs."

"Even the faster bowlers kept things under control and Vaas was very

disciplined in his effort while Fernando got reverse swing going and had me in trouble on a couple of occasions and I was lucky to survive some of the leg before shouts," Younis said.
