Stabilizing economy on foreign loans dangerous - Weerawansa
National Freedom Front leader MP Wimal Weerawansa yesterday warned the government that it is very dangerous to take loans from international financial institutions to stabilize the Sri Lankan economy. The government should look for another way out.
The government has taken a loan of US dollar 1.9 billion from International Monetary Fund (IMF) and another loan of US dollar 750 million is to be taken from the Asian Development Bank (ADB) and Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC).
"Even, very strong countries in the world are in a financial crisis. This is the biggest financial crisis the world ever faced. But, Sri Lanka could survive up to now on the basement of our bank system. With the recent fall of some financial institutions Sri Lanka will feel the effect. Taking loans from international financial institutions such as International Monetary Fund (IMF), World Bank, Asian Development Bank is no option for the problem. We have to form our own method to face the problem," Weerawansa said.
Several people including international and diplomatic community had reiterated that the government would not win a war against the LTTE. But, today, all of them had realized the truth. Sri Lanka should have to find solutions to the financial crisis in the same way, he said.
The NFF has prepared a concept success in the financial crisis. It would be released for public opinion shortly, he said.
