

The Fisheries Corporation has launched a programme to sell good quality fish to consumers at reasonable prices as the market prices of fish seems to be high. The Corporation was constrained to import fish due to high prices of fish and the first imported stock arrived in Sri Lanka on March 13, the Fisheries Corporation said.
Fisheries Corporation Chairman Munidasa Premachandra told The Island Financial Review that ordinary people were unable to buy good quality fish at fair prices as prices of fish in the market had gone up. The Fisheries Corporation was compelled to import fish to cater to the needs of people.
He pointed out that the Corporation had already made arrangements to sell imported fish such as tuna, thalapath, paraw, seer and mekarel at lower prices. The Fisheries Corporation sales outlets and mobile vehicles consumers would be able to buy 1kg of tuna at Rs.350.00, (market price Rs.400.00) 1kg of thalapath at Rs.360.00 (market price Rs.460.00), paraw at Rs.350.00 (market price Rs.470.00) and mackeral at 200.00 ( market price Rs.240).
Premachandra said that the Fisheries Corporation was planning to supply prawns, shrimps and crabs from the North to consumers across the country in the near future.
