Anuk de Alwis of St. Sebastian’s College, Moratuwa, recorded a splendid spell of bowling to take eight wickets to 53 runs to restrict Prince of Wales College to 120 for eight in their 2nd innings in their 59th annual big match that ended in a draw on Saturday at the De Soyza Stadium, Moratuwa.
The left-arm spinner took a match-bag of 10 wickets for 85 to win the best bowler’s award. He also became the Best Fielder of the match. He established a new record erasing the previous set by Suranga Wijenayake, who had taken seven wickets for 33 in 1995 for Prince of Wales. In the 2nd innings, the Cambrians declared at 120 for eight with 19 more overs left in the day. St. Sebastian’s were 44-2 as the match ended in a draw.
Earlier, after electing to bat first, Prince of Wales were struggling as they took lunch at 101 for eight on the 1st day but a 66-run stand for the 9th wicket between Shehan Dammallage (107 n.o.) and Nuwantha Peiris (32) and then a 50 runs partnership between both Dammallage and Mohamed Hassim for the 10th wicket helped Cambrians reach 209 all out.
Dammallge anchored their innings stroking 11 boundaries and a six and became the pick of the batsmen on day-1. He was adjudged the Best Batsman and the Best All-rounder for his fine performances.
In reply, St. Sebastian’s were 69 for four at stumps on the first day. They were bowled out for 161 in the very first over after lunch on Saturday. Shehan Jayasuriya troubled them most taking five wickets for 26.
This year, Prince of Wales were skippered by Buddhika de Alwis while St. Sebastian’s were led by Prageeth Perera. St. Sebastian’s have last won the annual big match 43 years ago under the captaincy of Sarath Perera while Prince of Wales have won last in 1977 under the captaincy of Premala Fernando.
Cambrians have won four encounters while St. Sebastian’s have won on two instances with 50 games ending in draw.
