Kiwis Ryde to victory

Jesse Ryder starred with bat and ball as New Zealand won the fifth one-day international against India by eight wickets.

In a match reduced to 43 overs per side due to rain, Ryder claimed figures of 3-29 to help skittle India for 149 in just 36.3 overs at Eden Park, Auckland.

New Zealand came into the match 3-0 down in the series having been utterly dominated by India’s batsmen either side of the rained out second match.

But the tourists’ decision to bat first in seamer-friendly conditions backfired as only Virender Sehwag (40) and Rohit Sharma (43no) hung around for long.

It was a welcome change of fortune for New Zealand’s bowlers as Iain O’Brien and Jacob Oram both picked up two wickets, although it Ryder’s occasional medium pace that proved most effective.

And Ryder then smashed 63 off 49 balls to lay the platform for the Black Caps to overhaul their target in just 23.3 overs.

The powerful left-hander, who plundered six fours and four sixes, shared a second-wicket stand of 84 with Martin Guptill after the early loss of Brendon McCullum.

Ryder was bowled by Ishant Sharma with the score on 93 but Guptill finished the job in the company of Ross Taylor.

The two sides now switch format to contest a three-Test series, starting in Hamilton on March 18.
