Ranil to reform UNP constitution
Leader of the UNP, Ranil Wickremesinghe is to present a set of reforms to the party constitution, informed sources said.
Wickremesinghe made his intentions known while presiding over a meeting of the Western Provincial Council Election
Campaign Committee (WPCECC) at his Cambridge Terrace office yesterday evening.
The sources said that Wickremesinghe, who is facing a revolt within the party, would be submitting his reforms to the Working Committee, which is due to meet on Wednesday.
The WPCECC, headed by UNP Deputy Leader Karu Jayasuriya, comprises Gamini Jayawickrema Perera, John Ameratunga, Tissa Attanayake, Ravi Karunanayake and S. B. Dissanayake.
Earlier in the day, Wickremesinghe launched a fund raising campaign at ‘Srikotha’. Anyone purchasing a Rs.1,000 ticket would be entitled to obtain UNP membership, it was announced.
Speaking on the occasion, he said that people should vote against the government, at the April 25 WPCE, because it had failed to introduce proper democratic reform, including the operationalisation of the Constitutional Council.
