Police arrest 5 over UEFA Cup violence
GLASGOW, Scotland (AP) - Five Scottish men were arrested Monday in connection with rioting by Rangers fans at last season's UEFA Cup final between Rangers and Zenit St. Petersburg in Manchester.
The men - aged 21, 24, 27, 34 and 36 - were arrested in Glasgow on suspicion of violent disorder. They were being taken to Manchester for questioning.
The early mornings raids by Glasgow and Manchester police came two months after the release of images of 49 suspects wanted in connection with rioting last May in Manchester.
Fighting broke out in the streets of the northern English city on the day Zenit beat Glasgow Rangers 2-0 at the home of Manchester City, leaving 15 police officers injured.
Police said 150,000 Rangers fans traveled south for the final, most of them without tickets. Trouble broke out when a giant screen being used to televise the game didn't work.
"The operation to bring those responsible to justice has been large and complex," said police superintendent Geoff Wessell, who is leading the investigation. "Trouble of that magnitude takes time to investigate properly and it cannot be allowed to go unpunished, but we have to remember that we were dealing with wanton violence on a large scale."
