New mega housing complex for MPs sought
The government is looking for property for a state of the art housing complex for members of parliament addition to the housing units at Madiwela.
The House Committee chaired by Speaker W. J. M. Lokubandara is in the process of locating a suitable property to implement the mega project.
Well informed sources said that although the Committee had received an assurance from the Urban Development and Sacred Area Development Ministry to make available a four-acre block of land at Weera Mawatha, Kalalgoda, earmarked for a housing project, it had not materialised. The sources said that the decision on the Kalalgoda land had been taken last November at a meeting presided over by the Speaker.
The House Committee had been recently told that the land couldn’t be inspected as the acquisition of the land hadn’t been finalised.
The sources said that the Parliament had also made an attempt to acquire a large block of land situated close to Janakala Kendraya. Dr. P. Ramanujam had explained the difficulty in taking over the land reserved for an Embassy. The sources said that the land near Janakala Kendraya could be easily categorised as one of the best available.
Political sources said that the House Committee would find suitable land for the project. Responding to our queries, the sources said both, the ruling coalition and the opposition would back the project.
The sources said that the Madiwela complex wasn’t large enough to meet the housing requirement of MPs.
