Lokuge wants rugby on right track

by Ravi Nagahawatte

Sports Minister Gamini Lokuge says that the best way he can help rugby is to see that the sport is administered in the proper manner.

Lokuge in an interview with ‘The Island’ said that the Rugby Interim Committee was entrusted with duties to solve rugby’s problems and he was satisfied in how rugby was administered at present.

"This was not a sports federation I intended to dissolve even in my dreams. But when the SLRFU’s president and secretary resigned, the rugby federation didn’t leave me with much of an option but to dissolve it," Lokuge said.

The Sports Minister said that once the problems regarding the voting system are solved, the SLRFU AGM would be held.

Lokuge said that the Rugby Interim Committee had been successful in finding sponsors for rugby. "Some sponsors have made a commitment to back the sport. Unfortunately I don’t have details of these companies right now but can get you their names," he said.

Asked what he had to say about the query made by the Auditor General regarding the final accounts of the SLRFU, Lokuge said, "The former ex-co members of the SLRFU have been asked to respond to this query by the Auditor General. If the response of the former SLRU ex-co members can’t be accepted by the Auditor General, then the Sports Ministry will intervene".
